HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE BET SHALOM ENDOWMENT

Contributing to the Bet Shalom Endowment is easy! Here are the various ways to donate:

  • Write a check payable to the “Bet Shalom Endowment” and send it to the synagogue’s office! You’re then entitled to a charitable gift tax deduction (Check with your tax preparer regarding the rules regarding the deduction).

  • Donate amounts up to $500 via this web page. For more than that, please send a check to the office.

  • Request a distribution from your Donor Advised Fund. (You cannot take a deduction since you took a deduction when you funded the Donor Advised Fund.)

  • Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA if you are over 70 ½ years of age. (While you cannot take a charitable deduction, your distribution reduces your Required Minimum Distribution.)

  • Give appreciated stock, mutual fund or ETF shares to the Bet Shalom Endowment. Contact the synagogue office for details like the account and the DTE number you’ll need for the transfer of shares. (You can take a charitable deduction for the value of the shares when transferred, and you won’t pay taxes on the shares when they’re sold.)

  • Make a “testamentary gift” to Bet Shalom Endowment via your will and estate plan. This is often the easiest way to maximize your giving and to leave a legacy to future members of Bet Shalom!

The Bet Shalom Endowment was started in 2005 and is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt type 3 supporting organization for Bet Shalom Congregation. Its annual distribution currently covers about 3% of Bet Shalom’s annual budget. Although in fall of 2023 the Endowment had about $3 million in an investment account, a synagogue of Bet Shalom's size should have an endowment of $5-10 million to comfortably sustain its functions. So we need to grow it a lot more!
