Richard J. Schwartz - Cantor
For more than 30 years, Cantor Richard Schwartz has served multiple communities and individuals as a cantor, spiritual leader, life-cycle officiant, Jewish music and liturgy consultant, performer, choral director, songwriter/composer, concert producer, religious school principal, B’nai Mitzvah mentor, and Hebrew, music, and Jewish studies instructor.
Cantor Schwartz received his Bachelor of Arts in vocal performance from the University of Massachusetts and prepared for a career in the cantorate in Los Angeles with cantors Samuel Kelemer, William Sharlin and Nathan Lam. He was certified by Hebrew Union College’s School of Sacred Music as Cantor in 2005, is a member of the American Conference of Cantors, was commissioned by the Cantors Assembly as a Cantor-Hazzan Minister in 1995, and is a fellow of the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, having completed their Cantorial Leadership program in 2005. In 2011 Cantor Schwartz graduated American Jewish University with a Masters of Arts in Education and a Bachelor of Hebrew Letters.
Joined by his wife, Lily, and daughter, Lyric, Cantor Schwartz moved to the Twin Cities in 2018 in order to serve the extraordinary community of Bet Shalom Congregation as its first full-time cantor. He is delighted to be here and grateful for the opportunity to fulfill his mission of connecting people to one another, Judaism, and God through music, words, prayer, and action.
