Each year we welcome our newest Religious School students to participate in a special ceremony called Consecration. This includes all Kindergarten students and also any 1st or 2nd graders who are either new to the community or who didn’t participate in previous years. If you have a 1st or 2nd grade student who didn’t participate in previous years, please read on.
The service begins at 6:00 pm and we hope you will extend the invitation to grandparents and other special people in your child’s life.
We will be taking a class picture at 5:15 pm, followed by dinner with Confirmation students and their families, before services begin at 6:00pm.
The Consecration ceremony marks the beginning of a child’s formal Jewish Education. Rabbinic literature teaches us the importance of making learning sweet. In the days of the shtetl of Eastern Europe, the beginning of a child’s Jewish Education was such an important occasion that parents would wrap their children in prayer shawls and carry them to school. The teacher often put honey on the page of a Hebrew book for the child to taste-so the child would always think of learning as “sweet.”
At Bet Shalom, we participate with the same measure of excitement in the ceremony of Consecration. We, too, bring our children to the synagogue for blessing. We share the sweetness of the ceremony by presenting them with their own personal Torah scroll and a special certificate. The personal Torah Scroll Cover is made by you!
IMPORTANT ACTION ITEMS
We will have a special Torah Cover kit that you will need to pick up from the Religious School office sometime before Consecration. There are easy instructions and all materials are provided in the kit! Please do not tell your child about the cover and remember to bring it with you to the service.
CLICK HERE to fill out this form confirming that you can attend the service and letting us know what your child’s Hebrew name is.
CLICK HERE to make a suggested contribution of $36 per family to help us cover the cost of the dinner.
We look forward to sharing this wonderful milestone with you and your family!
