This week we continued to learn about the post office and how mail is delivered, enjoyed lots of water play, and tried to beat the heat!
On Monday, we talked about the different types of vehicles that might deliver the mail. The class came up with a list that included mail trucks, mail cars, and mail airplanes. Later we all made our own mail trucks out of poster board and foam. You can see our trucks hanging in the hallway outside of the classroom.
For Tuesday, we focused on how mail gets delivered and mail routes. The children played a game during which they had to follow instructions and drive to different buildings to drop off letters, newspapers, and packages. It was a little tricky to find all the buildings on the map, but they did great and all the packages got delivered!
On Wednesday we played another fun game, this time using a map of the United States. Each child was given a map with one state colored in and they had to find the other person in the class with the matching state. Each time we found our partner was so exciting!
By Thursday we had endured so much heat that it was time for an icy experiment. Each child was given an ice cube and a tray of colored salt and got to explore what happens when you mix ice and salt. Before we started, everyone made a guess as to what they thought would happen- many were excited to learn that they had guessed right! The colors and textures created by the melting ice were wonderful to explore.
All week we’ve been loving our time outside in the water. The children have been filling buckets to wash the sidewalks and cool their bodies. Some children inspired by a favorite class book- Strega Nona, have even been recreating her famous pasta pot with water and wood chips. There’s nothing better than a sprinkler in summer!
We hope you have a wonderful weekend and are able to stay cool!
