Yarok Room ירוק (Pre-K)

New month, new holiday! Purim is coming at the end of the month, and this week we began to learn some fun Purim songs, brainstormed ideas around Purim, castles, and the ocean to find out what the kids wanted to learn in February.

We switched out puzzles, games, and animals to refresh our room. Please read below for a summary of topics in our week.

Fairy Tales. The story of Purim is a bit like a fairy tale, with “once upon a time,” heroes, a villain, and “happily ever after.” That’s why it’s fun to ease into the story by revisiting some fairy tales we’ve already studied and learning a few new ones. This week, we read and explored The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  The kids played with little figures and acted it out. On Friday, we will do some story sequencing on paper for fun.

The Ocean. The kids are excited about studying the ocean. Each day, Ms. Emily invited kids to make sea creatures with her- we had jellyfish, sea monsters, mermaids, sharks, and lots of sparkly fish.

On Thursday, we looked at seashells and learned some shell facts. I also took them through a sorting exercise by size, color, texture, and shape.  For the rest of the month, the kids can explore the shells on their own, under our microscope and with magnifying glasses.

Dramatic Play. We’ve decided to build a beach and ocean area. The ocean is really coming along, with some water on the walls and sea creatures hanging from the ceiling. I’ve added some mermaids and sand castle tools to aid in the storytelling. We’ll continue to build and add each week to add interest.

Social/Emotional Skills: SecondStep. This week we focused on naming our feelings. The curriculum builds upon the skills of helping kids learn how to calm themselves down. If they can name their strong feeling, the adults in their lives can better help them. Communicating is also calming. Your kids are doing great at listening and responding to these stories and scenarios in this practice.

A peek at next week: We will learn about the letter Oo, study sharks and the octopus more in depth, explore Jack and the Beanstalk, open a snack shop on our beach, and go fishing in our ocean.
