This week we continued talking about pumpkins by doing some crafts and science exploration!
For our Second Step lesson this week we learned about feeling mad or angry. Both concepts were supplemented with the books I’m a Seed, Pumpkin Soup, and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
First up on Monday the group got to work painting paper bag pumpkins for our pumpkin patch! They also started day 1 of growing their pumpkins. This is a fun activity using toy pumpkin shapes that grow in water. Although it is not the actual life cycle of a pumpkin plant, it is an interesting process to observe! In the book I’m a Seed, we learned about what the actual plant cycle looks like and looked at some real pumpkin seeds.
Tuesdays bring a bigger group of friends for more fun playtime ideas. Everyone has gotten very into connecting manipulative toys like bristle blocks and Zoob builders. The room was also switched up a bit and there are now cleaning toys like a broom and mop, and a bin of Lincoln logs! Lincoln logs are a little trickier to stack because it takes practice to set them together just right, but this class loves to build and create!
On Wednesday it was day 3 of pumpkin growing for the Monday starters and those pumpkins doubled in size and needed even more water to soak up! The other half of the class just “planted” their pumpkins today, so we will be able to compare the differences between the staggered start times! Anyone who was not in on Monday also made their paper bag pumpkins on Wednesday, and later stuffed them with crumpled paper to complete them. We will soon get to set these up in our dramatic play pumpkin patch!
We were also lucky enough to get outside twice already this week, and are hoping that the mild weather holds up a little longer.
Thursday brought more sun and a chance to get outside! Please remember to keep your child’s cubby stocked with snow pants, warm boots, waterproof mittens, and heavy coats. We try to get outside every day if the “feels like” temperature is 20 degrees or higher!
We had another day of pumpkin fun using our senses to play with a blackbean sensory bin and a bowl of roasted pumpkin seeds. We also collected pumpkins in baskets from our pumpkin patch! There was of course some big excitement over the size of our growing pumpkins as well.
Friday Jack will be our helper for Shabbat! It is also special person Shabbat where BSY friends and family are invited to join us at 9am.
Next week we will learn about transportation and incorporate more letter recognition and Second Step learning.
Shabbat Shalom! Have a peaceful weekend,
