This week we talked more about the ocean and a few the animals that live in the water and on the shore. We talked a lot about fish, starfish, and crabs.
On Monday I had rearranged the room a bit. We now have one quiet space by the library and our “Calm Down House” near the playground door. I opened up the beach area and added a blue tarp to be the water. There is also a small science table to explore items related to our theme. This week there were sea shells, driftwood, smoothed sea glass, and one of the sandcastles we crafted last week. Everyone spent lots of time exploring the many new toys in the different spaces!
We got to celebrate Kellan’s birthday on Monday as well which was an awesome way to start the week. Happy birthday to our friend Kellan!
It was nice outside so we were able to play in the sprinkler on the playground and run around outside.
Even though it was ocean week we still have our house/kitchen area in full swing with ice cream and popsicles and cooking on the grill! Near our puzzle area are some new activities like a treasure chest shape matching game and counting mats using mini ice cream shaped erasers.
On Tuesday we got to do water play again! After drying off inside we felt like making some artwork. Everyone chose a coloring page or piece of plain paper and got scraps of construction paper to tear up and glue into a collage. Tearing the paper and arranging it was good to practice patience, focus, and fine motor skills.
There were lots of fun fish songs to sing at circle time. The ones we learned this week were “5 Little Starfish” and “5 Little Fishies” (a fish and shark version of our other favorite, “5 Little Monkeys.”) Two books that we read together were Who’s A Friendly Fish? and Fish is Fish.
We also put out the fish puzzles again to practice numbers, colors, and opposites! Along with the small fish puzzles there was also an option to choose a giant floor jigsaw puzzle to make an ocean picture.
Wednesday was a rainy day which kept us busy inside playing with lots of different toys during free play. It also meant we got to run and jump our energy out in the big room instead of the playground which can be exciting when it’s been a while!
After our group time warming up our voices with songs like “Down By the Bay” and “Roll Me Over the Ocean,” we went to sing with Cantor Havilio for music class!
Since we didn’t have swimsuits to change out of, there was time for a fun process art project coloring bright blue paper to draw an ocean! I put out cartoon pictures of different sea creatures to draw from and later we added animal stickers to complete the scene!
Thursday luckily got us back outside in the sprinkler! There were also lots of tree frogs and baby toads hopping around all over the playground which were fun to find and watch. During free play we did more games like ocean animal picture bingo and building towers of flowers!
At circle time we sang “5 Little Starfish” and read Mister Seahorse.
Throughout this week I also introduced 3 classroom jobs: Line leader, lunch helper, and lights helper. We are practicing responsibility and doing important jobs to help the room run smoothly for everyone!
Friday we will have a fun Shabbat together with the other classrooms in the sanctuary.
Next week we will learn more about the ocean water and animals!
