Shalom! This week we had a lot of fun in the sun!
Monday started our summer season theme with discussions of warm weather and summer activities. I like to start this theme by setting out the ice cream shop toys and reading Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems. We also sang songs about the sun and weather like “Mr. Sun” and “Clouds Go By.”
Another addition to our house center was a grill for cooking up some yummy 4th of July cookout food to go with our ice cream!
Other fresh summer toys are flower garden builders, peg boards, and popsicle stick sorting.
To begin the day on Monday there was a choice to color a piece of paper to be rolled into an ice cream cone. This way we can add enough cones to our ice cream shop for everyone and use balls of scrap paper as more ice cream flavors.
On Tuesday we had a little extra excitement as we practiced a fire drill! Before we did that we were able to get outside to play on the playground. We have a new awesome sprinkler that sprays really high so more friends can run through and fill buckets easily!
There was also a choice activity in the morning to use dot-dots and make a beach ball craft. We are starting to set up our beach dramatic play area for the month and will need some fun decorations!
This week we added foam floor tiles as sand and infant seats as beach chairs! Along with sandcastle toys to build with our Mega Bloks. There were also some large shells to explore texture, color, and counting.
Wednesday was fun with music and water play in the morning. Cantor Havilio has been teaching a song about fireworks for celebrating the 4th of July!
During water play I brought out some frozen water colors to do ice painting outside on the sidewalk. It was a nice sensory activity and felt great to cool down! Many friends liked feeling the ice melt in their hands or mix colors on the paper.
Thursday was a day of celebration as it was Luna’s birthday and Mr. Benny’s birthday! Yom Huledet Sameach, friends! We read Luna’s favorite books, Little Monkey Calms Down and The Flea’s Sneeze while enjoying a cookie treat at lunch.
While getting dressed for water play in the morning there was a craft choice to decorate a popsicle to use to play in our ice cream shop!
Before lunch there was another project to make a slice of watermelon (for our 4th of July picnic of course) using tissue paper and glue on a folded paper plate.
All week we enjoyed reading the books Pete the Cat and His Cool Blue Magic Sunglasses, Baby Loves Summer!, and Where Is the Sun?
Next week we will learn more about the beach by exploring sand, shells, and water!
This was also Mr. Benny’s last week as his last day with our class will be on Tuesday. He has gone from my afternoon aide to an amazing lead co-teacher and he is moving on to continue spending more time on his college education. We appreciate all the love he has given all the classes at Bet Shalom throughout the years and he will be so missed!
Shabbat Shalom and have a wonderful long holiday weekend!
