Thank you to all of our wonderful parents and families for the appreciation this week! We miss getting to see you in person but enjoy getting to chat with you over conferences :).
This week was all about caterpillars! We have been observing some caterpillars growing in our room the past few weeks and last week they had all formed into their chrysalis! They needed to be transferred to be kept safe in the pre-k room where they will soon hatch in their butterfly house. Before summer we might get to have another special butterfly release outside in the garden!
All week we read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This is a story that everyone already knows well and some friends can “read” it from memory! During circle time I told the story in a different way each day. I used a tiny pipe cleaner caterpillar who can fit through the holes in the book, and then a felt story board to show the pictures from each page one by one. Our favorite was to act it out with each child as a hungry caterpillar growing and eating their way from little egg to beautiful butterfly!
For the other part of our circle time this week we started the third unit in our Second Step program. This week’s theme was about “worry” and other uncomfortable feelings. We read about two situations where someone felt worried and what that felt like in their bodies. When a child is feeling worried it can help to talk to their grown up at home or at school.
For the new month of May we changed our dramatic play area into a baby nursery for everyone to dress, feed, and care for our little baby dolls! In the dress-up cubby were more wings and a variety of animal headbands.
In the sensory table there is paper “dirt” with toy caterpillars, butterflies, plants, and flowers.
Several exciting events happened this week as we got to have Hebrew and music IN PERSON! Hebrew was just our class in the room and music was held upstairs in the sanctuary! It was so wonderful and special to see Rabbi Crimmings and Cantor Havilio for the first time in so long!
On Monday the group activity was coloring and gluing our names into a caterpillar! Each body circle of the caterpillar was one letter of a name and everyone glued them onto a picture of a leaf.
On Wednesday morning there was a choice activity just for fun to count and string green pouch tops onto pipe cleaners to make wriggly caterpillars.
On Thursday we colored in story crowns with the sequencing of all the foods the caterpillar eats in the book! Everyone enjoyed retelling the story and counting out the pictures of each food.
On Friday we will take a walk outside if the weather is nice.
Next week we will talk about butterflies and more about the life cycle from a caterpillar!
Hopefully we can also observe the chrysalises growing more in the pre-k room before the butterflies hatch!
Shabbat Shalom, have a great weekend!
Happy Mother’s Day to all of our amazing moms!
