Adom Room אדום (Toddlers)

We have had a super fun week in the toddler room!  We welcomed a new student, Rose, to our class.  For such a little nugget she’s jumped right into the flow of the classroom and gets along so well with the other children.  Welcome, Rose!

Our focus for this week coincides with our new dramatic play area…Toddlers’ Tasty Treat Bakery. Over the long weekend we set up an area of the classroom to be our own bakery.  We have LOTS of baking supplies (bowls, spoons, whisks, spatulas, baking sheets, aprons, oven mitts, ingredients, sprinkles containers, etc.). We also have pretend baked goods and cash registers and money.  We have been modeling baking the treats as well as purchasing them.  The donuts (made out of sweat socks and felt and are SO CUTE!) cost two dollars and the cookies cost one.  We pretended to buy the treats using our play money.  It has been such a fun addition to our classroom.

On Monday we read, Maisy Makes Gingerbread, and then had the kids help measure, pour, mix and sprinkle the ingredients for Cloud Dough.  It’s a very simple recipe with a high level of success.  As always toddlers LOVE to help “cook” and practice their (counting and measuring) math skills.

On Tuesday after hearing another story about baking the kids were able to play with their new could dough.  We had scoops, cupcake liners, sprinkles, and cookie cutters in their individual bins.  The dough is crumbly but packs together when squeezed.  It was a bit messy, but toddler teachers aren’t afraid of a little (or a lot) of extra clean up!

On Wednesday we had music with Cantor Havilio over Zoom.  She started introducing songs related to the upcoming holiday of Tu B’Shevat. The toddlers used their egg shakers to groove along with Cantor.  Also this week we have been focusing on rhythm sticks.  The kids are starting by only using one and tapping it on the floor along with the beat.  It’s an easy place to start and we will add a second stick (to tap together) in the future.  We also use colored scarves to go along with our songs and keep coming back to a huge toddler favorite – There’s a Spider on the Floor.  It hasn’t gotten old yet. 🙂

The mild weather this week has allowed the toddlers to play outside almost everyday!  It takes some work to get all the kids geared up but it’s definitely worth it!  Fresh air, crunchy snow and lots of room to run are a winning recipe! Thanks for doing such a thorough job sending all their snow gear everyday!  We appreciate it!

On Thursday we practiced some same/same donut matching after our storytime. The donuts had obviously different patterns, but also subtle differences to be discovered by the older toddlers.  We try to differentiate within our activities for the different age levels in the class whenever possible.

We have Shabbat on Friday and are planning to wash some dishes from our bakery in our sensory bins.  Next week our theme will be All Things Winter!

Shabbat Shalom!
