7:00pm: Turning From–Turning Toward, with Rabbi David Thomas
Local guest Rabbi David Thomas is a master teacher focusing on the Hasidic interpretation of Torah. His topic will be Turning From–Turning Toward, which will frame the High Holiday experience of turning and returning through these Days of Awe.
Each year at this season, our tradition invites us to reflect on the quality of our lives over the past year. Have we done well? In what ways did we miss the mark? Selichot calls us to get down to the business of cheshbon hanefesh – an accounting of our souls. This year, we will begin our observance with a beautiful teaching from R. Yehudah Leib Alter of Ger – The S’fat Emet. In his teaching, the S’fat Emet does not obsess about our moral failings; rather, he focuses on ways that missing the mark alienates us from other people, from God and from our true selves. Join us for this inspiring lesson as we prepare ourselves for the Days of Awe and the New Year ahead.
This engaging and interactive session will be facilitated by Rabbi David Thomas who recently retired after 17 years as senior rabbi at Congregation Beth El in Sudbury, Mass. Rabbi Thomas launched the award-winning MetroWest Free Medical Program. He is known for his social action and racial justice initiatives, as well as for leading his congregation to a 2017 vote declaring a Sanctuary in Support of Immigrants. A second-career rabbi, Rabbi Thomas was ordained at HUC-JIR in New York in 1998. He is a Senior Rabbinic Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute and has served on the board of the CCAR. He currently co-chairs the Joint Commission on Rabbinic Mentoring. David recently moved to Minneapolis to spend more time with his grandchildren.
