A Message From Rabbinic Intern, Jill Doornek:
"This week marks the transition from the book of Numbers, Bemidbar, to the book of Deuteronomy, Devarim. The names of these two books come from the same Hebrew root (daled, bet, resh), Bemidbar meaning 'in the desert or wilderness' and Devarim meaning 'words.' Some believe that the word wilderness comes from the root daled, bet, resh because the wilderness is a place in which we are best able to connect and speak to God. In this week’s portion, Devarim, Moses makes the transition from speaking to God in the quietness of the desert to speaking to the people in the noise that leads up to them entering the land of Israel. As we start to make the transition from the stillness of summer to the noise of fall, I hope that we will carry the words of God with us into our conversations and interactions with one another. I am leaving Bet Shalom at the end of this week to move to New York as I continue with four more years of school at Hebrew Union College. As I make this transition I want to thank you for a wonderful summer, and please know that I will carry all the experiences I had at Bet Shalom with me as I move to New York."

BET SHALOM NEWS & EVENTS

ICA Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive - Now through August 15

Intercongregation Communities Association - our local emergency food shelf - is short of peanut butter and jelly due to high demand during the summer months. They are asking member congregations to donate those items through the first two weeks of August. There is a cardboard box by the Religious School office with a sign for the ICA Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive. It will be there through August 15. Please stop by with jars of PB & J so we can fill the box and support ICA and help our neighbors in need. Thank you!

Bet Shalom Caring Community

The Bet Shalom Caring Community has grown. The Caring Community works with the rabbis, the cantor, and the new congregational nurse to support congregants in times of need. We visit congregants in their homes or in hospitals, provide meals to congregants, help with shiva arrangements, and provide rides to medical appointments.

If you would like more information about The Bet Shalom Caring Community or would like to get involved, please click here to for a printable form to fill out and return to the synagogue office.

Calling all Chaise Lounge Owners!

The Bet Shalom Caring Community would love to borrow a "very cushy adjustable chaise lounge chair for the yard" to be used by a congregant enduring bed rest until November.  If you have a chair to lend, please contact Nicki Murphy at (763) 522-6252.  Thank you!

JCC Maccabi Art Fest - August 17 - 22 - Registering Now

Are you a Jewish teenager in 7th-11th grade? Are you interested in art, music, acting, dancing, culinary arts, rock bands, photography and more? Then join us for the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest at the Sabes JCC from August 17-22, 2008.

In the spirit of the JCC Maccabi Games, the JCC Maccabi ArtsFest is designed to inspire Jewish teens through a dynamic combination of workshop, performance, exhibition, recognition of excellence, community service, social activities, and fun. URGENT! Desperately Seeking ArtsFest Host Families

ArtsFest is quickly approaching! Over 150 Jewish teens from around the country and Israel will be visiting the JCC and working in various arts disciplines throughout the week with renowned Jewish artists. This incredible event is only possible with the help of our local staff, volunteers, families and friends. With less than a month to go, we are desperately seeking another 10-15 Host Families. If you haven’t already registered to host out-of-town visitors, please do so as soon as possible at www.jccmacreg.org. Host Family commitment is very minimal, and does not require taking any time off from work. As a Host Family, you would be responsible for transporting the kids to and from the JCC each day (St. Paul families will bring their participants to the St. Paul JCC for a shuttle bus over here), feeding them dinner on Sunday and Monday, August 17 and 18, and breakfast Monday through Friday, and showing them our wonderful Twin Cities on Monday evening, August 18. Host Families also receive comp tickets to the Closing Showcase on Thursday, August 21st. Call Claire Avitabile at (952) 381-3447.
